Some of my favorite biographies over the years share a theme – there’s nothing like learning leadership through someone else's story, mistakes included. Here are four that have shaped how I think about building something that lasts.
Onward by Howard Schultz – a masterclass in leading through crisis with values intact, turning around Starbucks without losing what made it Starbucks in the first place. Years later, the open question is whether Starbucks can find its way back to its roots as a coffee house.
Steve Jobs by Walter Isaacson – a study in obsessive product vision, the kind of relentless focus on craft that built something the world didn't know it needed. Jobs is still my answer to “who, dead or alive, would you want to have dinner with?” Nearly everyone agrees he was a jerk and I’m fascinated by his fearless will anyway.
Leonardo da Vinci by Walter Isaacson – proof that curiosity itself is a superpower. Da Vinci’s cross-disciplinary mind – art, science, engineering, anatomy – is a reminder that the best ideas often come from connecting dots nobody else sees.
Elon Musk by Walter Isaacson – Isaacson’s most recent, a complicated, unflinching look at what it takes to build at the edge of what’s possible, and what it costs.
Four very different leaders, four very different eras – but all worth your time if you want to think differently about building something that lasts. What’s on your reading list?
