Celebrate Literacy All Year Long: Host an Online Book eFair!

Reading and literacy are essential parts of our lives, and there are numerous events throughout the year dedicated to celebrating and promoting these important skills. Hosting a Follett Book eFair is a fantastic way to engage your school community, share the joy of reading, and support your district’s literacy initiatives.

Here’s a guide to the various literacy events and months of recognition, along with tips on how to tie them to your Book eFair!

January

  • National Science Fiction Day (January 2): Host an online book fair tied to science fiction novels.
  • Library Shelfie Day (Fourth Wednesday): After your Book eFair ends, invite your students to share photos of their bookshelves and favorite reads they purchased.

February

March

  • National Reading Month: Host an online book fair and plan a monthlong reading challenge with prizes for students who read the most books.
  • Read Across America Day (March 2): Host a virtual read-aloud event featuring diverse books in conjunction with your Book eFair.
  • World Book Day (March 6): Host an online book fair on this day celebrating books from around the world.

April

May

  • Summer Reading Programs: Summer break is a time for fun, relaxation, and a well-deserved rest. But for teachers and school librarians, it’s also a crucial period to combat “summer slide” – the loss of learning that can occur when students aren’t reading regularly. Our online book fairs offer the perfect solution to help prevent literacy loss and keep kids engaged with reading throughout the summer months. June-August

  • Happy summer! We offer Book eFairs during spring (January-July) and fall (August-December)! Don’t miss out on scheduling your online book fair with flexible dates that work for your school community.

September

  • International Literacy Day (September 8): Raise awareness about global literacy and host a Book eFair to boost your literacy programs.
  • National Literacy Month: Organize a monthlong series of events, including an online book fair, author talks, book discussions, and writing workshops.

October

  • National Book Month: Help your students discover their favorite new book during your Book eFair.
  • National Reading Group Month: Encourage teachers to form student reading groups where they discuss their favorite books they purchased at the Book eFair.

November

  • Picture Book Month: Host story times and craft activities for young students during the week of your online book fair.

December

  • Read a New Book Month: Challenge students to find a book from a genre they’ve never explored before.

By hosting an online book eFair and tying it to a literacy month/day, you can celebrate the joy of reading and support reading initiatives for your school community all year long. You can also consider aligning your Book eFair with various seasons or holidays. Happy planning!
