ALL BOOKS & HANDS-ON LISTS > 2025 ALA AWARD WINNERS & CONTENDERS
The Schneider Family Book Award is given to honor books that best portray the experience of children and adolescents with disabilities. Established in 2003, the award recognizes authors and illustrators for their work in bringing authentic and positive representations of the disability experience to youth literature. The award has three categories based on age groups: Young Children, Middle Grades and Teens.
Each year, a book is selected for each age group that demonstrates excellence in representing individuals with disabilities in a way that is realistic, respectful, and enriching. The award encourages authors to portray disabled characters with depth and complexity, breaking down stereotypes and fostering empathy and understanding among readers of all ages.
Winning books may be in any genre (fiction, nonfiction, or picture books) as long as they contribute positively to the depiction of people with disabilities. The Schneider Family Book Award helps to raise awareness and appreciation for stories about the experiences and challenges faced by those with disabilities, promoting inclusion and diversity in children’s and young adult literature.
