The YALSA Award for Excellence in Nonfiction for Young Adults is an annual award presented by the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA), a division of the American Library Association (ALA). Established in 2010, the award honors the best nonfiction books written for young adults, typically ages 12 to 18, published in the previous year. The goal of the award is to recognize well-written and well-researched nonfiction books that appeal to young adult readers and help them explore various topics with accuracy and depth.
This award highlights books that cover a wide range of subjects, including history, science, memoirs, biographies, and current events, among others. The award is typically given to one book, although a short list of finalists is announced each year, showcasing additional outstanding nonfiction books.
YALSA created this award to encourage quality nonfiction publishing for young adults and to help librarians, educators, and teens themselves discover excellent resources that support lifelong learning and curiosity.
