Relational Teaching, Its Impact on Student Learning to be Explored in April 16 Virtual 'Book Talk' with Noted Author

BY FOLLETT CONTENT SOLUTIONS

MCHENRY, Ill., Feb. 29, 2024 — Noted author Anthony Reibel will headline a virtual event Tuesday, April 16, exploring the definitions of relational teaching and its impact on student learning. Follett Content Solutions and the McHenry County (Illinois) Regional Office of Education are co-sponsoring “Book Talk: Embracing Relational Teaching by Anthony Reibel,” which will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. (CDT).

Registration for the event closes on Monday, March 11.

Admission is $45 for non-Illinois residents and includes a paperback copy of Reibel’s 2022 book, Embracing Relational Teaching: How Strong Relationships Promote Student Self-Regulation and Efficacy, which will be shipped in advance to registrants. For Illinois residents, admission is $60, inclusive of the book as well as seven hours of professional development credit from the Illinois Regional Office of Education.

Participants in this session will:

  • explore definitions of relational teaching and its impact on student learning;
  • learn about the challenges schools face when implementing relational pedagogy and grading practices;
  • reflect on current needs in grading reform and explore how relationships with students can change grading practices; and
  • brainstorm ways to make relationships core in the classroom or library.

Reibel is director of research and evaluation for Adlai E. Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire, where he has been for 17 years. At the event, Reibel—a past recipient of Technology Educator of the Year as named by Illinois Computer Educators—will use his expertise to discuss the concept of relational teaching, a practice that puts the student before the score, their thinking before the product, and relationships in teaching.
