Celebrating 100 Years of The Great Gatsby

Tue. April 22, 2025

F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby recently marked its 100th anniversary on April 10, with festivities held around the globe – from St. Paul, Minnesota, where Fitzgerald was born, to the French Riviera, where he completed his iconic novel. But the reflection of this literary milestone won’t end there. As schools and libraries continue to observe this anniversary, there’s still plenty of time to bring it into your classroom or library.

Since author John William DeForest coined the term “Great American Novel” in 1868, many literary scholars have listed The Great Gatsby as a top contender. This novel takes center stage in many high school curricula, where teachers guide students through explorations of universal themes that remain as relevant today as they were in 1925. Through its window into human frailties and American society, the novel sparks thoughtful discussions about race, wealth, social status, the role of women, and the meaning of the American Dream. The setting also provides opportunities for important history lessons about the post-World War I “Roaring Twenties” and the impact of economic growth, consumerism, Prohibition, and rising racial tensions. Connections to the arts are made as students delve into the Jazz Age.
